Newborn babies in care proceedings

Researchers from the Centre for Child and Family Justice Research at Lancaster University, the Rees Centre, and Research in Practice have published findings from a study of newborn babies (under one week old) in the family justice system in England. The research, funded by the Nuffield Family Justice Observatory, used population-level data for 2007/08 to 2016/17 held by the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass) and found that: 16,849 babies under one week old were subjects of local authority care proceedings during the period; in 2007/8 1,039 newborns were subject to care proceedings – by 2016/17, this number had more than doubled at 2,447 newborns.
