Spiralling care costs ‘causing millions of children to miss out on help’

Nearly half of the entire £8.6bn budget for children’s services across England is spent on 73,000 children in the care system, resulting in gaps in provision for millions of other children, children’s commissioner for England Anne Longfield has warned.

 Almost half of spending on children’s services now goes on the 73,000 children in the care system, a study commissioned by children’s commissioner Anne Longfield has found.

Analysis by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, into levels of government spending on children between 2000 and 2020, commissioned by Longfield, found that that levels of government spending on children have been broadly maintained over the last 20 years.
