The figures from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government show there were 172,420 children living in temporary accommodation in June 2025, up 8% on levels a year earlier. With one in every 30 children now growing up without a stable home, the level is the highest since records began in 2004 and a symptom of the housing affordability crisis, says economic rights charity Just Fair. The organisation is calling on the government to fulfil its pledge to tackle homelessness, warning that housing insecurity undermines other basic rights, including health, education and family life.
