Disadvantage attainment gap widens in early years

Early years sector leaders are warning that the government’s focus on funding childcare for working families risks further worsening the disadvantage attainment gap after official figures showed this widened again last year. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) profile results for 2024/25 released by the Department for Education show that 72.5% of children not on free school meals achieved a “good level of development”, compared with 51.3% of those who are eligible.
