The Institute of Health Visiting (IHV) has published its 2021 annual survey, highlighting evidence gathered in relation to the needs of families with babies and young children in England. Key findings include: the needs of babies, young children and families are increasing, with an increase in vulnerability and safeguarding risks; there are not enough health visitors to meet rising levels of need; and video enabled contact can be used effectively to provide quick access to advice, but cannot safely replace face-to-face assessments. Recommendations include: increase funding to ensure sufficient resources; expand the workforce to better support families; and end the ‘postcode lottery’ of health visitor support.
