Government plans to make mainstream schools more inclusive for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are at risk unless support is spread more evenly across the education system, researchers are warning.
Increasing numbers of pupils with SEND are becoming concentrated in a minority of mainstream schools in England, creating what a report by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) describes as “unsustainable pressure” on those settings. The study, funded by education research trust Nuffield Foundation, analysed national data alongside a survey of 800 special educational needs coordinators (SENCOs) and school leaders, as well as case studies from schools across England.
