Removing newborn babies from their mother at birth

The Nuffield Family Justice Observatory (Nuffield FJO) has published a rapid evidence review and a case law review to identify key messages from research concerning birth parent and professional perspectives on pre-birth assessment and the removal of infants at birth In England and Wales. The reviews demonstrate the effectiveness of the current legal framework in protecting children, however they also found evidence of inconsistent practice including: delays and insufficient time for robust pre-birth assessment and misunderstandings of the legal framework or a failure to follow due process, which can lead to insensitive practice or injustice. Nuffield FJO will develop evidence-informed good practice guidelines for professionals involved in the process of removing newborn babies from their mother at birth for child protection reasons.
