Transgender children ‘face discrimination’ within social care system

Poor understanding of childhood gender dysphoria among social workers and a lack of specialist training on the issues has resulted in transgender children and their families suffering discrimination within the child protection system, a study has found.

 A report has found that childhood gender dysphoria is “poorly understood” by social workers.

report commissioned by the Department for Education found that there is a significant lack of transgender-specific social work research, but the available evidence suggests transgender people “commonly report having poor experiences within social and care settings”.
