Ofsted has published new data about unregistered and illegal schools in England, highlighting that the lack of external oversight of safeguarding, health and safety, and quality of education of these schools could put children at risk. Findings include: an estimated 6,000 children are being educated in the 259 unregistered settings Ofsted has inspected since January 2016, 71 of the inspected schools have been issued warning notices, and 28% of the institutions are alternative provision, with 26% being general education providers and 21% places of religious instruction.
