The Nuffield Family Justice Observatory has published new research on parents with learning disabilities or learning difficulties who are involved in care proceedings in England. Findings from court and social work records as well as interviews with mothers and professionals included: in 34% of the cases, one or more of the parents had learning disabilities or learning difficulties; in 75% of cases, learning disabilities or learning difficulties had not been identified until court; and late identification of parental learning disabilities meant that social worker communications, key assessments and parenting support services were very unlikely to be tailored to parents’ learning needs.
