The Guardian reports that the number of households in England being made homeless because they were fleeing domestic abuse has risen by more than a third since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Figures show that: between July and September of 2021, 6,310 households were accepted as homeless by local councils because of domestic abuse, an increase of 13.7% from the 5,550 recorded in the same quarter last year, and up 34.3% from the 4,700 in the third quarter of 2019. Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities figures show: a total of 36,510 households were identified as homeless from July to September 2021, including 9,730 households with children, 26.7% of the total.
