The Children’s Commissioner for England has published a new report on the use of unregistered children’s homes in England. The Commissioner requested information from local authorities about looked after children placed in unregistered children’s homes on 1 September 2024. The report found that: 775 looked after children were living in unregistered placements; the majority of children in unregistered homes were older teens; and the majority of children were placed in out-of-local-authority-area accommodation. Recommendations include: investment in developing therapeutic children’s homes with joint health and social care support and stronger disincentives for providers and local authorities to prevent the use of unregistered children’s homes.
