The Youth Endowment Fund has published a report on trends in violence affecting children and young people in England and Wales, looking at data on homicides, knife crime, involvement in the criminal justice system, poverty and other indicators. Findings indicate that children’s involvement in serious violence in 2022/23 was higher than a decade ago but is now falling; boys are disproportionately affected by violence; there is an overrepresentation of Black children in custody; and violence is concentrated in the poorest areas. The report also discusses services and sectors supporting children and young people and growing evidence about what works to prevent violence such as mentoring, therapies and ‘hot spot’ policing.
