HM Inspectorate of Prisons has published a report examining youth custody in England and Wales. The report looks at the experiences of 12- to 18-year-olds in custody through surveys and independent reviews of progress. Findings include: 66% of respondents to a survey of all children living in secure training centres (STCs) and young offender institutions (YOIs) in 2022/23 report having been in local authority care; and Youth Custody Service statistics show a 28% rise in the rate of assault incidents and a 37% rise in the rate of self-harm incidents involving children and young people between 2020/21 and 2021/22.
